Most Americans watch television on a fairly regular basis.  Among the commercials for Bud Light Beer, Geico Insurance, and Taco Bell are advertisements for prescription medications, medical products and medical

 procedures.  These commercials usually start out innocently enough informing us of the products purpose and efficacy.  With the same cheery voice-over however, much of the commercial is spent telling us, the consumer all the ways in which the product may harm us…or even kill us.  It was not that long ago that I was listening to a commercial about a prescription medication for depression that may cause suicidal thoughts for the people who use it. 

These products sell, in my opinion, for one of two reasons.  First, the condition the products purports to cure is so severe that the user does a cost benefits analysis and determines the risk does not outweigh the potential for relief.  Second, the user is so desperate for a solution that they ignore the associated hazards.  There are several examples of this in the health and wellness field.

works by tricking the body into believing that it is pregnant.  The HCG Hormone causes the body to mobilize fat to feed the fetus while reducing hunger.  Along with receiving injections the diet requires that you maintain a 500 calorie per day diet.  First off, I would argue that no diet that limits you to 500 calories per day could be healthy for you.  In addition, pregnancy is considered to be a disease state.  It increases morbidity and mortality in women…now, how bad do you want to be thin?  Ultimately, the program fails for many because you can’t stay with it forever.  Many doctors address this issue by starting the program all over again.  Do you see a problem here? 

Another example is a new technique developed by doctors to use ultrasound to zap fat cells (  Essentially your fat cells are killed with a high-intensity focused ultrasound along with another treatment that freezes fat cells.  The promise is that you can achieve weight loss without surgery (sounds positive!).  What you might not realize is that if you kill off the fat cells in your stomach and you start to gain weight you could begin to store fat around your heart and liver…still sound like a good idea? 

We are a nation of people looking for the short-cut.  We want to cut out the middle man to achieve success.  We are willing to do almost anything to achieve our goals related to fitness and appearance.  This may work well in business,

 our culture adds psychological pressures that further compromise a persons ability to achieve their health and wellness goals.  The fact that a person challenged by weight issues feels judged or discriminated against creates negative feelings that can actually cause a decline in physical health.

For anyone who has read this blog in the past you know my feelings on this subject.  I do not believe that it is right to judge someone based upon their appearance or level of physical fitness.  My Christian belief’s tell me that I am no better than anyone else and have no right to ridicule or discriminate against another person.  This does not mean that we should ignore the fact that someone maybe slowly killing themselves as a  result of their poor nutrition and fitness choices.  Positive change will only come about by first recognizing that  a problem exists and then by supporting that person to the best of your ability. 

The weight issues that Tamara and I experienced happened before we even realized what was occuring.  We both found ourselves obese and neither of us was very happy.  I didn’t have to tell Tamara she was overweight and I heart attack The Hidden Stressors of Obesitydidn’t need anyone to tell me about my problem either.  The only point I ever made to Tamara was that I was concerned about her health.  I didn’t want to be raising two kids by myself…and I certainly did not want to lose my wife to a heart attack or diabetes (both are prevalent on her side of the family).  I was supportive by telling her that she would always be my “standard of beauty” and that I would never compare her to other women.  Tamara, however, knew that something needed to be done as did I.  

Our initial efforts to solve our obesity problems took different paths (mine was focused primarily in the gym and hers was through trying various diets).  It was not until we discovered nutritional cleansing and replenishing (Isagenix) that we found our personal solutions. 

Ultimately, my point is this.  People should not be judging those people with weight issues; but, obese people have obligations as well.  The idea that the world should simply accept the fact that we are the fattest nation in the world and getting fatter all the time is just not going to work.  We all need to work a little harder.  If you are overweight I don’t want you to be stressed as I think that only compounds an eating problem.  But you have to do something.

I have been following the saga of Charlie Sheen, the star of the wildly successful television show Two and a Half Men, and his battle with CBS.  It is difficult to watch people self-destruct right in front of your eyes.  I think it can be especially difficult for you when you sit squarely in the national spotlight like Mr. Sheen, Lindsey Lohan or Amy Winehouse.  There is no escape and everyone gets to see you fail over and over again.  After years of being told that you are perfect, respected and adored it is hard to admit that you are none of these things.  It can be even harder to admit that you literally have to change who you are in order to survive.  It is much easier to believe you can “make” people accept the life you have chosen.    

I have some experience with addictive personalities based upon my primary profession as a law enforcement officer.  I have learned that the hardest step in walking away from destruction is admitting that you have a problem.  Until you are able to do a cost benefit analysis of your life and determined that you will lose more by maintaining the status quo than by committing yourself to some kind of change, a destructive path may seem acceptable…even normal.  Even when the decision is

made to change your life most people seek out a path to least resistance in order to accomplish this end.  Those of you who read this blog on a consistent basis know the title of my favorite and most inspiring book.  This book makes it clear that the road less traveled may be the most difficult initially.  In the end, however, choosing this path above all others can reap rewards that you never realize existed.  

I have taken a rather circuitous path to get to my ultimate point as it relates to Nutritional Cleansing.  I would argue, however, that it was worth your wait.  There are many addictions such as alcoholism and drug that can slowly chip away at a person’s happiness, health and peace of mind.  Most of them are open for discussion and are obvious to our family, friends and associations.  Often these addictions are ignored because no one likes conflict…no one likes to be the bad guy to tell you that you have a problem.  I will be the bad guy here and tell you that if you are engaged in a lifestyle that is resulting in obesity and its associated weight-related health conditions then you have a problem and you better do something about it sooner than later.  As I have stated in the past, many of us have become quite accepting of you overweight and obese people.  The reason is simple…you are in the majority.  Statistically, you outnumber the people that fall into the range of what is considered to be a “normal” and healthy weight.  You, in fact, have become the norm.  Your addiction is no longer considered a “problem”.  We get yelled at and confronted if we say being overweight is unattractive, unhealthy and a poor example to our family and friends.

What if instead of an addiction to food, our nation was addicted to Cocaine or Meth?  Would we continue to hesitate to point out the elephant in the room or would we all be screaming from the rooftops that something needed to be done?  I’m screaming!!  There are many solutions to the various addictions including food addictions.  I liken them to the various fitness routines.  If I told you that the only resolution to your weight problem was by jogging many of you would throw up your hands and simply say, “I guess I am meant to die at an early age  overweight and  unhealthy”.  I would be right there with you as I would rather have a long slow root canal than run five miles.  I believe that fitness in the gym comes down to finding the routine which appeals to you and motivates you as an individual.  Maybe it is aerobics, maybe it is spinning or maybe it is 183995 1619961700757 1287852844 31620473 4682297 n Making a Decision for Positive Changeweight training.  Maybe it is a combination of all three.  Regardless you can’t go on your first run and decide that exercise and fitness just isn’t for you.

Dr. Cade, in my opinion had noble intentions when he developed his drink.  I cannot say the same for the new breed of “energy” drinks such as Monster, and the most notorious in recent history ‘Four Loko’.  This alcohol infused “energy” drink contained 12% alcohol and extremely high levels of cafeine.  It was not until complaints of mass illness and potential deaths were reported that ‘Four Loko’ was removed from the shelves. 

In a recent Associated Press article titled ‘Pediatrics Report Details from Energy Drinks’, the issue of dangerous energy drinks was tied to injury and illness in children.  One example cited involved an 18 year old child who had

My greatest concern with the drinks is their very reference.  The term ‘energy’ drink bears a similar conotation as was offered by Dr. Cade and his Gatorade in the 1960′s.  Calling them ‘energy drinks leads one to believe that there is some sensory or physical benefit to drinking them.  You may feel  more alert, but at what cost.  Furthermore, what chemicals are providing you with that stimulation?  Would a cost benefit analysis of what you are receiving and what is being taken away eliminate your desire  to take another sip (chug)? 

We have made the decision to  not  offer these drinks to our kids, nor do we drink them ourselves.  When we began our new lives  into our Nutritional Cleansing and Replenishing program we made a concerted effort to eliminate food and drink that would be contradictory to our effort to cleanse our bodies.  I would never claim to be perfect and we are most certainly human.  We do cheat on occasion, but we have also made some common sense

Nutritional Cleansing and Replenishing

Some of the frequent visitors to the CleanseBenefits Blog know that one of my favorite documentaries is FoodMatters.  The DVD available through   discusses our current state of health and how weFood Matters Nutritional Cleansing and Replenishing as Americans are no longer receiving adequate nutrition from the food we eat.  This is attributed to the fact that the fruits and vegetables we eat today are very different from those of 50 years ago.  We have leeched the vital nutrients from the soil which means important vitamins and minerals are not making it into our bodies.  Furthermore, because our food travels such great distances and it can be weeks before it reaches your plate, much of the nutritional value contained in the food is significantly depleted.  If the fruits and vegetables are not adequate to provide all that a body needs the way we are preparing our beef and poultry is not helping either.  I would recommend the documentary Food Inc. to you; however, I suggest you may never eat another hamburger for the rest of your life.  

Ultimately, we are introducing additives, preservatives and other chemicals to our bodies in the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink.  Conversely, most of America is doing little to counteract this onslaught by introducing vital healthy supplements into our dietsFoodMatters does not sugar-coat this situation and states definitively that we are slowly poisoning ourselves.  Considering the garbage we are putting into our mouths it is ironic that we are eating so much of it.  We are, as most everyone is aware, the fattest nation on the planet.  

One of the major points made in the Foodmatters documentary is that we have become a nation of prescription drug users, i.e. “One pill for every ill.”  We fail to recognize that many of the diseases we suffer from are directly connected to what we put into our bodies…and what we fail to put into them.

  • Detox Diets
  • Digestive System Cleanses
  • Castor Oil Packs 

There are some pros and cons associated with these processes, but I believe that all of them are lacking in one way or another.  One of the most common of the cleanses noted above is the colon cleanse.  

There are several significant dangers commonly associated with a colon cleanse

  1. If contaminated water is introduced into the body during a colon cleanse, severe sickness can result.  Kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion.  
  2. Some herbs used in colon cleanses are particularly powerful in producing detox reactions like diarrhea and headaches
  3. Some colon cleanses can contain non-organic ingredients that have traces of pesticides and other chemicals in them. 
  4. A colon cleanse can hurt the process of shedding nutrients and absorbing vitamins and minerals.  This can cause the colon not to function properly. 
  5. The body could absorb too much water during the procedure causing a myriad of dangerous reactions.  

Is there a positive alternative?  The answer is yes.  A system of nutritional cleansing can release impurities that can slow down your metabolism while providing high grade nutrition to your body’s internal organs.  In addition, nutritional cleansing can:
