Pregnancy and…weight loss?

As many of you maybe aware my wife Tamara struggled with obesity for much of her life.  As a matter of fact, when I first met her she had just completed a regimented diet plan helping her to lose a significant amount of weight.pregnant 2is Pregnancy and...weight loss?  Tamara was able to control her weight issues through limiting her diet for some time until she got pregnant with our daughter.  As a result of this pregnancy and the subsequent pregnancy with my son, Tamara developed health issues that caused her to gain 65 pounds over the course of the next 10 years.  One of the things I remembered from both of the pregnancies is that the doctor was never concerned about Tamara gaining too much weight; rather, he  was concerned with her gaining enough. 

According to a article many doctors follow the recommendations from the Institute of Medicine in regards to pregnancy and weight gain.  According to this advisory panel, obese women should still gain 11 to 20 pounds during their pregnancy.  This recommendation is less than the 25 to 35 pounds recommended for women considered to be of normal weight at the beginning of their pregnancy. 

New research may indicate that weight gain recommendations for pregnant women are all wrong…or, at the very least, may need to be modified.  The associated study suggests that women with a BMI of 40 or higher could actually benefit from losing weight during pregnancy

Some of the benefits to obese women losing weight or maintaining their weight during pregnancy include:

  • Reduced potential for C-section deliveries
  • Reduced potential for delivering large newborns

Counting Calories and Weight Loss Success

If you wish to win the weight-loss race, you have to begin with finding the starting line.  Determining the number of calories necessary to maintain your current weight is useful information when it comes to fighting the battle of the bulge.  This number then can help you to determine how many daily calories you will need to consume to actually lose weight.  The Mifflin-St. Jeor equations are a fairly accurate tool to establish daily calorie requirements.

1.     Convert your weight and height

To lose one pound per week you have to subtract 500 from the number above (daily caloric needs).  This number tells you how many calories you should consume each day to achieve weight-loss.

To lose two pounds per week, in addition to adjusting your caloric intake as indicated above, add 45 minutes to an hour of physical activity each day. 

Using the above equations a 42 year old, 6 foot, 200 pound man who lives a moderately active lifestyle would have a BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) of 1849.  This same man would need to take in 2866 calories a day to maintain his current weight.  If this man wanted to  lose a pound a week he would have to maintain his current lifestyle and eliminate 500 calories from his daily intake.

 view of many wives towards their husbands.  We husbands generally have a limited capacity to multi-task, i.e. watch television, read a book, etc., and at the same time hear what our wives are trying to tell us.  Based upon a new study conducted by researchers at Kent State University in Ohio, the next time you miss something your wife says you may want to look down to the belly under the t-shirt to explain your lack of understanding and perception. 

The researchers tested the cognitive functions of volunteers suffering from obesity and compared these results to subjects at a healthy weight.  It was determined that obese people generally scored lower than the non-obese subjects.  In fact, 25% of the obese subjects scored low enough to be considered learning disabled

Even more astounding, the researchers determined that correcting the obesity problem, i.e. losing weight through various methods in order to achieve a healthy weight, may boost cognitive scores.  Subsequent to the initial study two-thirds of the obese study participants underwent weight-loss surgery and released an average of 50 pounds.  This weight-loss appeared to have a correlary effect of increasing test scores related to memory.

When I first started researching the study I felt it was possible that the lower test scores in obese people may be related to the amount of time that was spent eating as opposed to engaging in cognitive activities.  This led me to believe that test scores would remain the same for some time after the weight was lost.  However, the researchers used magnetic resonance imaging to scan the obese subjects brains.  They determined that there was actually physiological evidence that obesity has an adverse affect on the brain.  Researchers found indications of damage to the substance that surrounds and insulates nerve fibers which indicated that this substance is needed for optimal cognitive function

The ultimate take-away from the study is obesity robs sufferers of much more than their physical health.  Beyond the weight related physical diseases experienced by obese people, there is now a psychological component that negatively impacts their lives.  There are so many negatives associated with being obese that it becomes more critical every day for people to change their lives and lifestyles. 

I am not a purist.  I accept the fact that nutritional cleansing may not be for everyone.  I reject the idea that there are people who cannot follow the system; however, I do accept that there are those that simply don’t want to.  Nutritional cleansing does require some commitment and a leap of faith that something you have yet to try might actually work.  If my wife had not made that leap she would still be considered obese.  she would still be almost 70 pounds overweight.  We probably would not have a long happy life together.

Most Americans watch television on a fairly regular basis.  Among the commercials for Bud Light Beer, Geico Insurance, and Taco Bell are advertisements for prescription medications, medical products and medical

 procedures.  These commercials usually start out innocently enough informing us of the products purpose and efficacy.  With the same cheery voice-over however, much of the commercial is spent telling us, the consumer all the ways in which the product may harm us…or even kill us.  It was not that long ago that I was listening to a commercial about a prescription medication for depression that may cause suicidal thoughts for the people who use it. 

These products sell, in my opinion, for one of two reasons.  First, the condition the products purports to cure is so severe that the user does a cost benefits analysis and determines the risk does not outweigh the potential for relief.  Second, the user is so desperate for a solution that they ignore the associated hazards.  There are several examples of this in the health and wellness field.

works by tricking the body into believing that it is pregnant.  The HCG Hormone causes the body to mobilize fat to feed the fetus while reducing hunger.  Along with receiving injections the diet requires that you maintain a 500 calorie per day diet.  First off, I would argue that no diet that limits you to 500 calories per day could be healthy for you.  In addition, pregnancy is considered to be a disease state.  It increases morbidity and mortality in women…now, how bad do you want to be thin?  Ultimately, the program fails for many because you can’t stay with it forever.  Many doctors address this issue by starting the program all over again.  Do you see a problem here?

 our culture adds psychological pressures that further compromise a persons ability to achieve their health and wellness goals.  The fact that a person challenged by weight issues feels judged or discriminated against creates negative feelings that can actually cause a decline in physical health.

For anyone who has read this blog in the past you know my feelings on this subject.  I do not believe that it is right to judge someone based upon their appearance or level of physical fitness.  My Christian belief’s tell me that I am no better than anyone else and have no right to ridicule or discriminate against another person.  This does not mean that we should ignore the fact that someone maybe slowly killing themselves as a  result of their poor nutrition and fitness choices.  Positive change will only come about by first recognizing that  a problem exists and then by supporting that person to the best of your ability. 

The weight issues that Tamara and I experienced happened before we even realized what was occuring.  We both found ourselves obese and neither of us was very happy.  I didn’t have to tell Tamara she was overweight and I heart attack The Hidden Stressors of Obesitydidn’t need anyone to tell me about my problem either.  The only point I ever made to Tamara was that I was concerned about her health.  I didn’t want to be raising two kids by myself…and I certainly did not want to lose my wife to a heart attack or diabetes (both are prevalent on her side of the family).  I was supportive by telling her that she would always be my “standard of beauty” and that I would never compare her to other women.  Tamara, however, knew that something needed to be done as did I.

I have been following the saga of Charlie Sheen, the star of the wildly successful television show Two and a Half Men, and his battle with CBS.  It is difficult to watch people self-destruct right in front of your eyes.  I think it can be especially difficult for you when you sit squarely in the national spotlight like Mr. Sheen, Lindsey Lohan or Amy Winehouse.  There is no escape and everyone gets to see you fail over and over again.  After years of being told that you are perfect, respected and adored it is hard to admit that you are none of these things.  It can be even harder to admit that you literally have to change who you are in order to survive.  It is much easier to believe you can “make” people accept the life you have chosen.    

I have some experience with addictive personalities based upon my primary profession as a law enforcement officer.  I have learned that the hardest step in walking away from destruction is admitting that you have a problem.  Until you are able to do a cost benefit analysis of your life and determined that you will lose more by maintaining the status quo than by committing yourself to some kind of change, a destructive path may seem acceptable…even normal.  Even when the decision is

made to change your life most people seek out a path to least resistance in order to accomplish this end.  Those of you who read this blog on a consistent basis know the title of my favorite and most inspiring book.  This book makes it clear that the road less traveled may be the most difficult initially.  In the end, however, choosing this path above all others can reap rewards that you never realize existed.  

I have taken a rather circuitous path to get to my ultimate point as it relates to Nutritional Cleansing.  I would argue, however, that it was worth your wait.  There are many addictions such as alcoholism and drug that can slowly chip away at a person’s happiness, health and peace of mind.  Most of them are open for discussion and are obvious to our family, friends and associations.  Often these addictions are ignored because no one likes conflict…no one likes to be the bad guy to tell you that you have a problem.  I will be the bad guy here and tell you that if you are engaged in a lifestyle that is resulting in obesity and its associated weight-related health conditions then you have a problem and you better do something about it sooner than later.  As I have stated in the past, many of us have become quite accepting of you overweight and obese people.  The reason is simple…you are in the majority.  Statistically, you outnumber the people that fall into the range of what is considered to be a “normal” and healthy weight.  You, in fact, have become the norm.  Your addiction is no longer considered a “problem”.  We get yelled at and confronted if we say being overweight is unattractive, unhealthy and a poor example to our family and friends.

What if instead of an addiction to food, our nation was addicted to Cocaine or Meth?  Would we continue to hesitate to point out the elephant in the room or would we all be screaming from the rooftops that something needed to be done?  I’m screaming!!  There are many solutions to the various addictions including food addictions.  I liken them to the various fitness routines.  If I told you that the only resolution to your weight problem was by jogging many of you would throw up your hands and simply say, “I guess I am meant to die at an early age  overweight and  unhealthy”.  I would be right there with you as I would rather have a long slow root canal than run five miles.  I believe that fitness in the gym comes down to finding the routine which appeals to you and motivates you as an individual.  Maybe it is aerobics, maybe it is spinning or maybe it is 183995 1619961700757 1287852844 31620473 4682297 n Making a Decision for Positive Changeweight training.  Maybe it is a combination of all three.  Regardless you can’t go on your first run and decide that exercise and fitness just isn’t for you.

The Relinquishing of Control: Giving up Power over our own Health

Municipalities and other government bodies across the country have passed laws that dictate and limit the amount of trans-fat, sodium and other unhealthy food characteristics in order to protect us from ourselves.

Since discovering this article I have found several other examples of healthy food mandates.  In a 2006 article it was identified that New York City had passed a similar trans-fat ban.

Regulations and laws serve the purpose of filling a vacuum.  They are generally created because people have failed to assume personal responsibility for doing that which is right, just and smart.  For many it is simply easier to give up responsibility for themselves and their families and allow some external force to make those daily decisions for them.  

Many of you may applaud these regulations and statutes and believe it is just too difficult to keep track of what is going into our bodies on a daily basis.  It could be argued that trans-fat laws are no different than banning or controlling other substances that could kill you, e.g. lead, asbestos, etc.  Yet I believe there is a great chasm separating things that are poisonous from things that are unhealthy.
