“Oh no…Sugar Makes me Dumb?!”

Friday, May 18th, 2012

It turns out that too much sugar not only makes you fat…it can also adversely affect your memory and ability to learn.  According to a study conducted by scientists at UCLA, too much fructose interferes with insulin’s ability to regulate how cells use and storehigh fructose corn syrup “Oh no…Sugar Makes me Dumb?!” sugar in the body.  Your body’s ability to use sugar efficiently is necessary to effectively process thoughts and emotions.  It can be argued, therefore, that sugar has as much of an impact on your mind as it does on your body.

I have never been much of an extremist when it comes to nutrition.  My wife and I do not keep a lot of sweets in the house but I cannot say that we don’t have the occasional scoop of ice cream.  With that said, I have always believed that for a diet or fitness regimen to be successful and sustainable, it has to consist of a relatively simple lifestyle change…one that can be maintained for a lifetime.  This is why I have argued against diets such as the HCG Diet.  These diets offer effective short-term results; however, unless you are willing to change the way you eat after the weight is lost or after you have reached your fitness goals, you will eventually revert to your starting point (if not worse than you were to begin with).

Therefore, I would never suggest that you should not have anything with sugar in it again (unless you have the willpower to pull it off).  Most likely, you would throw up your hands in frustration and say, “I just can’t do that!”  What I am suggesting is that your sugar intake should be reasonably moderated.  This is critical for our kids since we are establishing the patterns and habits for their future.  Maybe we can all be a little smarter in the process!

What’s in a (Nutritional Products) Name

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

My wife’s greatest strength when it comes to nutrition, well being and health can also at times be her greatest weakness.  She believes with all her heart, mind and soul in the great nutrition offered by Isagenix.  She has tried them and experienced their positive

effects first hand.  It is easy for her to talk about them because she is excited about what they have done for her and her family.  As a result, she is eager for others to experience these same results.  It is kind of like watching your kids open their presents on Christmas morning.  It is much more satisfying than any present you could open yourself.

Because of her own experiences she believes the products and systems can change people’s lives.  This does create a problem, however.  When you believe so strongly in something, it is difficult to accept and understand when others do not see what you see.  It is not a judgement or indictment of those who do not share this passion; but it can be confusing to someone who has accepted the efficacy of a nutritional product completely.  My wife and I are an evidence based couple that needs to see it, taste it, touch it, or otherwise experience it.  We have seen the evidence and have no doubts.

One of the challenges of Isagenix products and systems is that the product names evoke a specific perception.  A good example is the Isagenix IsaLean Shake.  The name is an obvious reference to weight loss or weight maintenance.  Yet there are professional and world class athletes who have come to understand the nutritional benefits of the products beyond the potential for weight control.  This understanding, however, requires some research and understanding of the products.  The point is that if you think that Isagenix is only for those looking to experience weight loss, then you only know half the story.  Athletes like Lori Harder…bikini model, competitor and trainer have figured it out.  The solution is to do your own research.  If you need some guidance and direction I am sure my wife would love to talk to you.

What influences Your Childs Eating Habits?

Monday, October 10th, 2011

I have some good news.  You may have more influence on your children than you give yourself credit for.  When my children were very young my wife and I struggled with the decision to have her work outside the home and bring in a second income, or have her stay home to raise our kids.  Several years later this decision would lead her into a profession that would offer her the best of both worlds.  Those that know us know I am referring to our network marketing business.  At the time of this decision however we were both very concerned about the financial challenges we may experience.  Even though this perceived hardship was later determined to be mostly unfounded we still needed to conduct a cost/benefit analysis of our decision.  In the end we realized that our concern for our children’s future far outweighed the question of how to make wealth.  We realized that in 20 years our children were going to be our legacy.  They were going to reflect back on us for good or bad.  If our children turned out well and reflected the values we believe are important, then we would be able to take some credit.  Conversely, if they turnedlovinit What influences Your Childs Eating Habits? out poorly we were going to have to take the blame.

Sometimes we as parents relinquish some of our responsibility, but in the process also relinquish some of our control over our childrens future.  We may blame the behavior of our children on their choice in friends; or the influence of their school; or the television shows that they watch.  I believe that these influences, however, are provided power over them by the decisions we as parents make about the examples we set for our children.  Our kids see where we go, what we do, and who we associate with and determine that these decisions are appropriate for them as well.  They choose the friends they do because those are the types of friends we keep.  They may be  influenced at school because we have failed to provide them with the proper tools to survive in an environment that may contradict our own belief system.  They are influenced adversely by television because we don’t retain an interest in what they are watching.

In a recent article in MyHealthNewsDaily they discussed a study dealing with the influence that television commercials have on kids decisions about the foods they eat and the smart eating choices they make.  Surprisingly it was determined that when parents intervene and discuss the commercials and the choices offered about proper nutrition, children can be positively influenced by their parents.  Therefore, all hope is not lost.  Just because McDonald’s tells your kids they should be “lovin’ it” when referring to french fries, you just may be able to convince your kids to love apples or grapes!

Ulcerative Colitis (IBD) and Nutrition

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

I have a very good friend at work who’s daughter suffer’s from Ulcerative Colitis (A form of Inflamatory Bowel Disease).  As is often the case when it comes to serious ailments that affect our children, my friend is well on her way to becoming an Ulcerative Colitis (IBD) and Nutrition expert on the topic.

Quite often parents who find themselves in such situations become more knowledgable concerning a particular disease than many doctors.  Passion and intimate concern prompts education about diseases such as Ulcerative Colitis more than most other catalysts in my experience.  My friend is no different and plans on translating the knowledge that she has aquired coupled with her desire to help others into a blog of  her own.  When she is up and running I plan on sharing the name of her blog with all of you.  Her blog will be focused like a laser on relating the day to day trials and tribulations of having a child who suffers from Ulcerative Colitis.  I believe she will be able to provide thousands of parents with information and comfort as they try to understand and cope with the disease.

I do not pretend to understand the issues she must deal with; however, whenever I am presented with information concerning a persons digestive system I feel compelled to comment as it relates to nutrition.  I have done some research and determined that there are some nutritional considerations.  Failing to pay attention to nutrition can have serious implications because symptoms of diarrhea and bleeding can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and loss of essential nutrients. That can lead to a host of problems such as fatigue, weakness, and anemia.  It is generally recommended that a well balanced diet consist of…

  • Foods high in protein
  • Complex Carbohydrates
  • Whole Grains
  • Good Fats

The research I have read indicates that there is no specific diet for people suffering from Ulcerative Colitis, but the big challenge seems to be avoiding foods that cause distress.  This can require some trial and error when determining what exactly causes a problem for  you or your child; however, there are some foods which seem to be common triggers for distress.  Some of these foods to consider include…

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Carbonated Beverages Ulcerative Colitis (IBD) and Nutrition
  • Dairy Products
  • Dried Beans, Peas or Legumes
  • Dried fruits, berries, fruits with pulp or seeds
  • Foods containing sulfur or sulfate
  • Foods high in fiber, including whole-grain products
  • Hot sauce, pepper
  • Meats
  • nuts, crunchy nut butters
  • popcorn
  • products containing sorbitol (sugar-free gum and candies)
  • raw vegetables
  • refined sugar
  • seeds
  • spicy foods, sauces

I am not the expert.  I will defer to my friend when her blog comes available.  In the meantime I offer this brief primer.

How FAT are your kids? How FAT are you?

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

I was watching The O’Reilly Factor on Fox News Channel today.  In one of the segments a panel was discussing a situation where a severely obese child was removed from his fathers home by a government entity.  The child was 11 years old and…400 POUNDS!!

One of the arguments made by one of the panel members defending this decision was this.  How was this action anyobese child203 How FAT are your kids? How FAT are you? different than the choice to remove a child from a home because he was NOT being fed?  In other words, if we were talking about malnurished children due to the parents neglect, would anybody argue against rescuing the child from such an environment.  I found this argument to be interesting as it caused me to reconsider my previously stated position on this matter…not change it…just reconsider it.

There were some additional facts that should be noted about this specific case.  The father was physically incapable of properly taking care of his son because of his own physical issues.  As a result of the fathers physical limitations he was feeding his son fast food three times a day.  The child was ultimately removed from the home because it was believed the child would not live past 20 years of age if something was not done.  I must admit that in these very specific circumstances, I do not disagree with the resolution.

Yet I want to make it clear that identifying children with obesity in general does not justify breaking up a family.  fast+food+kids How FAT are your kids? How FAT are you?Furthermore, it certainly does not justify the government interfering with the family structure.  If we as a nation begin to travel down this path, where does it stop.  Will we remove children for being 300 pounds…200 pounds…150 pounds?  Will we remove children from their homes because they are getting bad grades in school?

Removing children from their homes would open a can of worms that I do not think we would close very easily.  There is another consideration as well.  The percentage of fat kids (pardon my bluntness) has tripled over the last 30 years to 17%.  If the government is going to take care of solving the problem of obesity for children by removing them from homes, where are they going to put them all?

The bottom line is this.  As I have stated repeatedly, we need to consider how our behaviors and decisions as they relate to food and nutrition are influencing our children.  If we smoke, they stand a much greater chance of smoking.  If we drink to excess, they are more likely to do the same…and if we abuse our bodies and become obese…well…you get the picture.  I am curious what all of you think about the government taking the 400 pound 11 year old.  I must tell you I am torn.  We all need to start looking at ourselves before something like this becomes commonplace.

The Pillars of Health

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

I spend a great deal of time on the CleanseBenefits Blog discussing issues related to health and obesity.  There is a subjectLONGEVITY The Pillars of Health of much deeper concern, however, that ties these posts together.  Everyone needs to examine the reasons why they are concerned about weight loss, weight control, nutrition and overall physical health.  The underlying motivation for many beyond the narcissistic desire for a better appearance is the hope for a better, longer and healthier life.  When considered from this perspective weight loss is only one component of achieving this end.

It is one thing for a person to live for 70 years as an invalid tied to a bed and medical devices designed to keep them alive for one more day.  It is an entirely different situation when someone lives for 80, 90 or more years as a vital and productive member of society.  Anyone who feels that they still have something to contribute while avoiding the potential to become a burden for others should have a desire to stay on this earth a while longer.  Society is quick to judge the elderly, and brush them to the side much too early.  It is understandable why some of our older citizens begin to devalue themselves as a result.  This is sometimes referred to as apoptosis, where the brain tells the body that it has outlived its usefulness and the only thing left to do is die.

I do not speak from experience, but I would venture a guess that many of our elderly in the United  States eventually lose their motivation for life when they assume they can no longer offer something of value to society.  Despite the fact that I believe

 The Pillars of Health

Quality of Life

everyone that is alive can offer something of value to include experience, advice and love I don’t think that everyone shares this belief.  I do believe that happiness plays a major role in a person’s health and their ability to remain productive in body, mind
and spirit.  When a person ceases to feel they contribute value it is sometimes harder to convince them that their presence is necessary to friends, relatives and loved ones.  It is difficult to remain happy with that mindset.

Therefore, we are brought to the topic of the day.  How does a person continue to feel as if they have value even as their body moves into the winter years?  How is it possible to live extended lives and remain healthy so we can continue to feel like a positive contributor to our communities?  This is a topic ever present in my heart and mind as it relates to me as well as my 80 year old parents.  What are the steps we can take to improve our health and quality of life to continue feeling like our lives
maintain meaning and purpose?  The answer lies in understanding what causes us to age and our bodies to break down.  If we can acquire this knowledge then we maybe able to alter the assumed inevitability of our lives as we move into our senior years.

There are essentially four categories of concern when it comes to understanding what it is that adversely affects our health, longevity and quality of life:

  • · Toxicitywoman in stress The Pillars of Health
  • · Obesity
  • · Stress
  • · Inflamation

If there were only a way to influence how these circumstances affect our body we may be able to limit their adverse affects.  Over the course of the next several days and weeks I will be discussing potential solutions to these concerns.

Stay tuned for more!

Does the Government Know Better Than You When it Comes to Raising Your Kids?

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

On July 12, 2011 FoxNews.com published an article discussing a recent commentary in the Journal of American Medical Association.  In the commentary it was suggested that super obese children should be taken away from their parents as if they were being abused.  In my opinion, this is a frightening proposal as it begs the question “how much power should a government have in shaping the life of a child.”  Personally, I subscribe to the belief that a government powerful enough to give you everything you need also has the power to wrest away everything you have.  I lean towards the opinion, that above all else, our personal responsibility trumps the power of others to affect our lives and that power should be guarded at all costs.

Several years back documentary movie director Morgan Sperlock produced a film called Supersize51T82FS9Y8L. SL500 AA300 Does the Government Know Better Than You When it Comes to Raising Your Kids? Me.  Mr. Sperlock was prompted to create the film when he read the story of two teenage girls who were suing McDonald’s blaming the restaurant for their obesity.  A point of discussion in the movie had to do with the girls personal choices that led to them being overweight.  Ultimately, the question was whether or not these girls had control over their decisions related to the food they ate, or were they so weak that they were unable to resist the enticement of the famous clown.  I would have a hard time admitting such a weakness and believe with all of my heart that everyone has ultimate control over their own lives.  It is only when we refuse to take responsibility for these poor choices do people start to blame others for their bad health

I have known many people in my life who claim that they are unable to control themselves when it comes to alcohol, drugs…or yes, even food.  I do not deny that there are many people who experience some weakness, whether it is physiological or psychological that increases the likelihood that they will make poor decisions related to dangerous or unhealthy behavior.  I still believe, however that these behaviors are chosen.  It is like the person who uses inappropriate language at work and claims they can’t control themselves.  Yet this same person will refrain from this language when they are around their parents or children.  Controlling it may be difficult, and require some effort, but it can be done.  In my opinion, the people who claim they can’t stop eating are simply offering an argument so they can continue to engage in the behavior they know to be wrong and destructive.

Does the Government Know Better Than You When it Comes to Raising Your Kids? This brings us to the discussion for today.  Some presumably smart people are suggesting that they know better than you when it comes to raising your children.  Where does this presumption end?  If your kids are not getting good grades?  If they are getting in trouble with the law?  If they are not eating their vegetables?

The article provides the statistic that there are currently approximately two million American kids who are “extremely” obese; however, the article also admits that these kids are not being influenced solely by their parents.  Where adults remain much more impervious to advertising and suggestion, kids are much more susceptible to the images they are exposed to on the television screen.  Yet I take great exception to the idea that forces external to the family unit would do a better job  of raising responsible children brimming with good character.  I will not say that parents who allow their children to become morbidly obese are doing a good job; however, the answer is that they must do a better job.  We as Americans must recognize that our behavior is cheating our children out of a healthier, longer life.  We must recognize our personal responsibility when we are making choices that will shape the lives of our children

The Cost of “Living”

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

In a May article on Bloomberg.com it was reported that the cost of living rose the fastest since December of 2009.  This increase was being driven largely by rising food prices.  Our ability as a countrybloombergnewssquare The Cost of “Living” to purchase food stuffs that in the past we have taken for granted has become increasingly more difficult.  There are many factors that are causing food to cost more to include the price of the fuel to transport it.  President Barack Obama recently released oil from the strategic oil reserves in an attempt to control gasoline costs which are driving up costs in all the parts of our economy.  This attempt failed and now oil is already on its way back up with predictions that it will spike significantly this summer.    This is very bad news for the overall health of the country.  I am not referring to our fiscal health, but I literally mean our physical health as it relates to our nutrition

According to the Bloomberg article, over 44 million people have been pushed into poverty since June of 2010.  The cost of staples such as wheat, corn and soybeans, have risen to frightening levels.  Wheat has gone up 57%, while soybeans have increased 39%.  The bottom line is that the cost of eating right has always been more expensive than the cost of eating poorly. This problem has become much worse over the course of the last several months.   This has everything to do with what foods we as a country have subsidized.  The foods that are easy to reproduce quickly are the ones that have received the most attention from the government.  Unfortunately, these foods are not the ones that are the best for us.  A good resource to understand how this works is the 511eHmnaBCL. SL500 AA300 The Cost of “Living”documentary Food Inc.  The movie is very informative but frightening in describing the way our food habits have been manipulated based upon what foods are produced cheaply and easily.  When times are good people can afford to eat fruits and vegetables.  When times are bad McDonald’s restaurant stock goes up.  We are already the fattest nation on the planet.  The last thing we need to do is become more frequent customers at fast food restaurants…yet that is the place we find ourselves.

We are caught in a catch-22.  As our bank accounts shrink we are forced to find sustenance in food that we would rather not eat if we are concerned about our health.  Furthermore, the future does not look positive.  We need to be providing our bodies with high grade nutrition and vitamin supplements to counteract the garbage we introduce into our bodies.  But high quality supplements cost money, which we have less and less of.  The solution can be found in quality meal replacement.  You are able to provide your body the fuel it needs while avoiding the problem of adding to our ever expanding grocery bills…and ever expanding waistline.

My wife and I have found our solution with Isagenix.  Everyone in our family is meeting their nutritional needs with the supplements from the IsaKids Essentials to the Isagenix IsaLean Meal Replacement Shake.  By replacing meals, my wife and I have discovered that we are saving money.  Isagenix International provides evidence of this potential in the flyer you see here.

What’s in Your Meal Replacement Shake?

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

To derive the greatest benefit from a meal replacement shake, you have to know what you are looking for.  There are several considerations when making such a decision that can help you to avoid a lot of experimentation and repeated trips to the local isalean shakes choc van 240 What’s in Your Meal Replacement Shake?nutrition store.  First and foremost you need to know what makes for a good meal replacement shake.  You want something that provides your body with the nutrients that it needs while allowing you to cut calories to lose weight.  You also need to pay attention to the type and quantity of protein in the formula.

There are five additional factors that you should research before making a final decision:

  1. Does the product provide long-term weight-loss results, regardless of whether your goals are total weight-loss or ideal weight maintenance?
  2. Is there any third party empirical scientific evidence to back up the products claims of effectiveness?
  3. Is the purpose of the shake to replace a full meal; or will it serve only as a snack between meals?
  4. Is the shake free of additives, artificial ingredients, artificial flavors or sucralose?  In addition, is the product tested for contamination of pollutants and heavy metals?
  5. Is the product available at a reasonable price?

My wife and I believe that the Isagenix Isalean Shake meets all of these criteria.  The IsaLean shake has delivered long-term weight-loss results to include more than 5.4 million pounds released and 6.5 million inches lost by people using the product.  A clinical university study demonstrated that the IsaLean shake surpassed other protein shakes for weight loss results.  The shake is a full meal replacement with 23 grams of Whey Protein which serves to prevent muscle loss while you lose weight.  The IsaLean shake is low in saturated fat while being high in healthy poly- and mono-unsaturated fats.  The shake is all natural with no additives.  Finally, the Isagenix IsaLean shake offers great nutrition at a great price.

The Good Fortune of Nutritional Cleansing

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

What does a fortune cookie’s fortune have to do with nutritional cleansing?  I love oriental food.  Actually I am fascinated by it.  A chef is able to combine ingredients that many people normally don’t eat and blend them in a wayFortune Cookie The Good Fortune of Nutritional Cleansing that makes any entree appealing and desirable.  Vegetables like snap peas, water chestnuts, carrots, sprouts and the like are combined with unique spices and tasty sauces into an explosion of taste and flavor.  That is why I chose to have my favorite for lunch today…Kung Pao Chicken.

After I finished my delicious meal I looked into the bottom of the bag and spoted the individually wrapped fortune cookie.  Because I am conscious of how many sweets I put into my mouth I will generally skip this dessert.  This does not mean that I skip the fortune.  Now I don’t actually believe in the fortune.  I don’t believe words written on a tiny slip of paper should be directing my life and guiding my decisions.  Yet I do find the fortunes amusing.  Today my fortune read, “There is no greater gift than good health.  Cherish it always.”  Like many of the fortunes contained in those folded yellow cookies, I was having a hard time understanding how these words predicted my future or were supposed to change my life.  Despite this fact I did find value in the passage.

I believe with all of my heart that good health is one of the greatest blessings that can be bestowed on a man or

woman.  Good health is the soil that a good life grows from.  With that knowledge it should be easy for you to understand why my wife and I are so passionate about Isagenix and nutritional cleansing.  The many Isagenix products, paks and systems are the means by which I can bring a complete stranger closer to a healthier life.

The challenge has always been to convince the receiver of this good news that my intentions are pure and that I am not simply trying to “sell” them something.  This challenge is true for any network marketerMulti-level marketing is very different than any other type of sales.  We are not offereing everyday items.  We are tasked with convincing someone that they need something they never needed before.  Furthermore, we must make our pitch in unconventional locations and circumstances.

A lightbulb salesman has a built in customer base.  He does not have to convince someone that they need to buy lightbulbs.  Instead, he simply needs to convince the buyer that they should buy their lightbulbs from him.  Network marketers must convince the buyer of one of three things.

1.  The product or service they offer is “better” than what can be found in a traditional store

2.  The product or service they offer is “cheaper” than similar products bought through more conventional means.

3.  The product or service is so unique or special that they only reason the buyer hasn’t bought it before is because they were unaware of its existence.

Isagenix and nutritional cleansing fall into the third category.  Isagenix has provided such a unique health and weight loss solution to me and my family that I cannot help but tell others about how it has changed our lives.  I cannot

200 aunz choc shake The Good Fortune of Nutritional Cleansing

IsaLean Shake

compare it to any other product or service because what it offers is so special and profound that such a comparison would not do it justice.  It is not simply a nutritional supplement.  It is certainly not a weight loss program like so many others on the market.  Finally, the IsaLean Shake is not your typical athletes meal replacement.  It is all of these things and so much more.  We would love the opportunity to tell everyone reading this blog how it has changed our lives…and how it could change yours.
