The Hidden Stressors of Obesity

Friday, March 11th, 2011

In a recent health article on it was suggested that the stressors associated with obesity go far beyond health risks such as heart disease and diabetes.  The fact of the matter is that the stigma of obesity in

Obesity in America

our culture adds psychological pressures that further compromise a persons ability to achieve their health and wellness goals.  The fact that a person challenged by weight issues feels judged or discriminated against creates negative feelings that can actually cause a decline in physical health.

For anyone who has read this blog in the past you know my feelings on this subject.  I do not believe that it is right to judge someone based upon their appearance or level of physical fitness.  My Christian belief’s tell me that I am no better than anyone else and have no right to ridicule or discriminate against another person.  This does not mean that we should ignore the fact that someone maybe slowly killing themselves as a  result of their poor nutrition and fitness choices.  Positive change will only come about by first recognizing that  a problem exists and then by supporting that person to the best of your ability.

The weight issues that Tamara and I experienced happened before we even realized what was occuring.  We both found ourselves obese and neither of us was very happy.  I didn’t have to tell Tamara she was overweight and I heart attack The Hidden Stressors of Obesitydidn’t need anyone to tell me about my problem either.  The only point I ever made to Tamara was that I was concerned about her health.  I didn’t want to be raising two kids by myself…and I certainly did not want to lose my wife to a heart attack or diabetes (both are prevalent on her side of the family).  I was supportive by telling her that she would always be my “standard of beauty” and that I would never compare her to other women.  Tamara, however, knew that something needed to be done as did I.

Our initial efforts to solve our obesity problems took different paths (mine was focused primarily in the gym and hers was through trying various diets).  It was not until we discovered nutritional cleansing and replenishing (Isagenix) that we found our personal solutions.

Ultimately, my point is this.  People should not be judging those people with weight issues; but, obese people have obligations as well.  The idea that the world should simply accept the fact that we are the fattest nation in the world and getting fatter all the time is just not going to work.  We all need to work a little harder.  If you are overweight I don’t want you to be stressed as I think that only compounds an eating problem.  But you have to do something.

Celiac Disease, Gluten and the Isagenix IsaLean Shake

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Several weeks ago my wife was with my 13 year old daughter at her archery training.  My daughter has been doing archery now for over three years and is doing quite well.  My wife has sponsored my daughter through herIsagenix%20Isalean%20Shake%20Chocolate Celiac Disease, Gluten and the Isagenix IsaLean Shake Isagenix business which makes perfect sense.  My daughter drinks an Isagenix IsaLean shake with me before going to school every morning.  She is in great shape and doesn’t need to lose weight, but she does desire to gain strength and lean muscle.  The IsaLean Shake has been helping her to accomplish this goal.

Since my wife is her sponsor and covers all of her expenses, you can find my daughter wearing a “bling” covered Isagenix shirt at every tournament.  You can also find an Isagenix sticker on her bow case.

At this particular practice my wife was approached by a woman who began

Celiac Disease, Gluten and the Isagenix IsaLean Shake

asking her about Isagenix after noticing the sticker.  The woman indicated that she suffered from a fairly rare disorder called Celiac Disease.  A disorder, up to this point, my wife and I had never heard of.  The woman indicated that she wanted to speak with Tamara more as she had done some research on her own and believed that Isagenix products may be able to help her with her ailment.

When my wife got home she told me of her conversation and I began to search through Google for information on Celiac Disease.  Credibility has always been of extreme importance to me.  If I am going to lay claim to knowing what I am talking about I better be sure of my facts.  This is what I found.

Celiac Disease is a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and as a result prevents it from absorbing nutrients from food that are vital for staying healthy.  As a result, people suffering from this disease can become malnourished no matter how much food they eat.  No one knows what causes the disease; however, doctors believe the damage to the small intestine is due to a reaction from eating gluten.  Essentially gluten elicits an improper response from the immune system

Doctors believe there may be up to 3 million people currently affected by Celiac Disease.  It is also believed that the disease is severely underdiagnosed.  Some of the common symptoms include:

  • Diarrhea

celiac disease type1 diabetes Celiac Disease, Gluten and the Isagenix IsaLean Shake

    Celiac Disease

  • Abdominal Pain
  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Weight Loss

Some additional indications that might point to Celiac Disease include:

  • Blistering
  • Itchy skin rash
  • Anemia
  • Short Stature
  • Infertility
  • Tooth Enamel Defects

So why was this woman asking Tamara about isagenix?  She knew what I have since learned.  The Isagenix IsaLean Shake is a high nutrient formula that is gluten free, wheat free and barley free

I would never presume to make medical claims about the curative powers of IsagenixIsagenix is  not a “cure” to anything.  Rather, I simply state the obvious to those suffering from Celiac Disease.  Most of the Isagenix products avoid the ingredients that cause your anguish while providing you with a high quality nutrition source.

Aren’t all Powder Proteins the Same?

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

There are two elements associated with a nutritional cleansing and replenishing program.  The first element involves the cleansing of impurities from the body.  I liken it to an STP treatment for your engine.  Youlogo stp Aren’t all Powder Proteins the Same? remove the impurities and your engine runs more efficiently.  In your body your engine running better means your metabolism is more efficient, and as an added benefit you have a tendency to lose weight.  I have found with my own nutritional cleansing and replenishing system that my body’s metabolism has a tendency to center itself.  I released pounds and found a weight that optimized my fitness level and athletic performance.

The second step to achieving a healthy lifestyle is to replenish the body with high grade nutrition.  Many athletes use a variety of vitamins and supplements to accomplish this end.  This is critical considering the poor state of health and fitness in this country and some of the junk we consider food.  One of the most common means by which athletes replenish their bodies is with a protein-based thumbnail.aspx?q=525279038240&id=31a9d4dc965f89831fee6092948d94eb& Aren’t all Powder Proteins the Same?powder.  There are several different protein powders on the market at the present time that can be mixed into flavored meal replacement shakes (usually a chocolate meal replacement shake or a vanilla meal replacement shake).  The options presented below are in order from least to most effective/comprehensive in achieving total health and fitness.

Whey Powder

Of the three options I will discuss, this is the least expensive of the protein powders.  There are three different types of whey protein to include hydrolyzed whey protein, whey protein isolate, and whey protein concentrateWhey protein contains little fat and cholesterol and is also low in lactose.  There are few carbohydrates and it is high in calciumWhey protein increases training related fat loss if consumed immediately before or after you work out.  Whey protein also increases protein synthesis if taken right before or after a work out.  It is easily digested and absorbed.

Whey Protein/Calcium Caseinate Protein Powder

This blend of ingredients provides two different protein sources that are absorbed in different ways.  The whey protein is quickly absorbed while the calcium caseinate protein is absorbed much more slowly.  This combination gives you an immediate source of protein as well as a time released source over time.  This combination increases fat loss when consumed just before or after your workout.  The added element of calciumIsaLean Nutrition Aren’t all Powder Proteins the Same? caseinate is synthesized from dried skim milk.

Whey Protein/Calcium Caseinate Protein/Carbohydrate Powder:

This is the blend that I use and seems to offer the greatest benefit to those looking to improve overall health and wellness, manage their weight and build lean muscle mass.  The introduction of carbohydrates and fat to this blend of proteins creates a super food for those looking to…

  • Maximize nutrient absorption
  • Support vital body functions
  • Build Lean Muscle
  • Manage weight

I would suggest to anyone looking to incorporate a protein powder into their diets and work-out routines to read the label.  Not all protein powders are the same so a little research is necessary.  If you would like to talk about the protein-based meal replacement shake that I am taking which falls into the last category I would be happy to talk to you about it.

“Go Packers!”, But don’t pack on Excess Weight

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

Super Bowl 2011 Official Logo “Go Packers!”, But don’t pack on Excess WeightWell, the big day is tomorrow.  The Green Bay Packers face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.  I grew up in Chicago watching the Bears, but my allegiances for the game tomorrow were established the day I married my wife.  She grew up in Green Bay, so unless I want to sleep on the couch I will have to root on the Packers.  That’s ok…I have grown to love the Packers just like her.

I will have to be careful about what I eat tomorrow, though, based upon a recent article that discussed post-Super Bowl related deaths.  The article did not suggest I would die from being hit by an errant linebacker while standing on the sidelines (fat chance of that happening since I am not going to spend $5000.00 a ticket to watch a football game).  Instead the article (Super Bowl Losses can Increase Cardiac Death, January 31, 2011, Medicine and Health/Health) asserted that sports fans who became excessively involved in rooting for their favorite team only to have their efforts go in vain are susceptible to high degrees of emotional distress.  This emotional distress seemed to lead to increased instances of cardiac deaths.  In men there was a 15 percent increase in all circulatory deaths associated with a Super Bowl loss.  Women apparently take their football even more seriously than men as they saw a 27 percent increase in cardiac deaths.

chips pretzels sides xl “Go Packers!”, But don’t pack on Excess WeightNow if this doesn’t prompt you to want to take better care of yourself on the big day, then I don’t know what will.  I would suggest that you should not be filling your body with artery clogging, high cholesterol, fat-filled foods (why load the dice before you roll them?).  In a recent press release from the Calorie Control Council dated January 24, 2011 titled Score Big with Healthy Super Bowl Recipes; Push Unhealthy Snacks to the Sideline on Game Day, some disturbing statistics were revealed.  On Super Bowl Sunday Americans will eat 30 million pounds of snacks.  This will include 11.2 million pounds of potato chips, 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips and 2.5 million pounds of nuts.  The average football fan will consume 1200 calories and 50 grams of fat from snacking.  Those totals do not include meals.

The press release recommended that everyone pre-plan their game day festivities to include only non-fat or low fat foods.  In addition, a pre-game work-out could help to burn off calories to make room for the food you will eat throughout the course of the day.

Chuck Norris doesn’t have to cleanse…Impurities are too Afraid to enter Chuck Norris!

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Chuck Norris recently wrote an article discussing external toxins and our need to cleanse them from our bodies.  You can read the article at (  I love Chuck Norris.  He is one of those rare celebrities that, despite the allure of fame and fortune, he has managed to stayChuck Norris Facts Chuck Norris doesn’t have to cleanse…Impurities are too Afraid to enter Chuck Norris! centered and focused on the things that are truly important in life.  He is an honest and humble guy who is able to make fun of himself.   In my estimation those attributes makes him extremely dependable and trustworthy.  If Chuck says something, then you can count on the fact that he believes it with all is heart.

In his article Chuck provides some interesting facts that are indirectly supportive of the concepts behind the Isagenix® systems, products and paks.  Mr. Norris asserted that cleansing toxins from our bodies has become a mainstream topic of discussion because “our air, water, food and household products are streaming with contaminants.”  As I have stated in previous posts there are arguments that many of the common diseases experienced by modern man, to include many cancers, are a direct result of impurities and toxins entering our body through a host of sources to include our food.  You just have to read the back of a Twinkie® package to realize just how many chemicals are present in the American diet today.  If you do not pay attention to this nutritional information you are probably Junk Food Chuck Norris doesn’t have to cleanse…Impurities are too Afraid to enter Chuck Norris!consuming things that would shock you.  In Mr. Norris’ article he quotes author Mike Adams who stated, “Today more than 95% of all chronic disease is caused by food choice, toxic food ingredients, nutritional deficiencies and a lack of physical exercise.”  I feel like I can retire from the blogging business now as Mr. Adams managed to summarize every single blog I have ever written and virtually every argument for incorporating Isagenix® into a desire to lead a healthy lifestyle.

There are virtually thousands of man-made chemicals that have been introduced into our environment, and more are produced every year.  It is, therefore, not a surprise that these chemicals are showing up in our bodies and in the bodies of our children.  In Mr Norris’ article he cited a study conducted by the American Red Cross on the umbilical cords of newborn children.  It was determined that these cords contain “…an average of 287Cleanse single bottle 200x200 Chuck Norris doesn’t have to cleanse…Impurities are too Afraid to enter Chuck Norris! contaminants, of which 180 are carcinogenic.”

In the end, I believe the inevitable conclusion is that cleansing is becoming more and more important for everyone.  I believe that Isagenix® can help you like it has my family.

Cardio vs. Weight Training and Weight Loss

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Several weeks ago Tamara was asked by one of her product users about the best strategy for maximizing weight loss in the gym.  It should be obvious to everyone reading this post that despite the amazing potential for Isagenix® products, systems and paks to help you reach your weight loss and fitness goals, your success can be expedited andgym Cardio vs. Weight Training and Weight Loss enhanced by a well planned workout regimen.  What I have discovered…Drum roll please…is that there is currently no consensus that can lead you to one specific workout plan to maximize weight loss.  Virtually every source seems to have a different opinion as to what will lead to the greatest success.  With that said, there is some information available that can help you make some better personal choices on how to utilize your time in the gym.  Ultimately, everyone seems to say that weight loss success in the gym is a great experiment unique to each individual.  I can suggest some things you can try to discover what best works for you.  Remember, these suggestions are assuming your goal in the gym is to facilitate weight loss while improving your level of fitness.

Both cardio and weight training have their pros and cons when integrated into a fitness regimen.  Most sources suggest that you should ensure adequate energy exists to make it through an effective workout routine.  Therefore, you may consider splitting your cardio and weight training so these workouts occur on separate days.  Another suggestion is to combine the two specialties with interval or circuit training which give a full body workout.   Weight lifting often burns more calories per minute than performing endurance exercises.  Furthermore, muscles require energy, i.e. the cardio exercise Cardio vs. Weight Training and Weight Lossmore muscle you have, the more fat you will burn.   However, you will most likely fatigue more quickly if you focus entirely on weight training in a workout.  This, once again suggests that a combination of cardio and weight training is the best strategy (combined with good nutrition of course!).

So should cardio occur at the beginning or the end of your workout?     Many sources suggest it is better to do cardio first and then lift weights when your desire is to increase weight loss.  Yet cardio has a tendency to deplete the body’s carbohydrate stores.  Therefore you are eliminating the fuel your body needs to get in a good weight training routine.  Too much cardio can also be a bad thing as you may find your body burns muscle to ease the demands of doing too much aerobic work.  We should then pay attention to the “Hierarchy Scale of Energy”.  If you understand how your body burns fuel, then you may be able to build a workout that best serves your fitness desires.

The human body accesses certain nutrients for energy in the same way and in the same order every time.bicep Cardio vs. Weight Training and Weight Loss

1.         Muscle Glycogen—Sugar processed from carbohydrates and stored in muscle for contraction.

2.         Liver Glycogen—Storage organ for excess Glycogen; this is the primary fuel source for brain function

3.         BBA (Blood Borne Amino Acids)

 4.         Fat

As you can see fat is the last thing to go.  Ultimately Perry NIckelston in his article Smart Cardio to Burn Fat suggests the following framework to help reach your weight loss goals (Smart Cardio to Burn Fat, Nickelston, Perry,, September 23, 2008).

1.         5-minute cardio warm-up

2.         30 minute weight training routine (This will eat up #1-3 on the hierarchy scale)

3.         15-20 minutes of cardio to now hit the fat reserves

The last consideration is heart rate and I will address this in my next post.  If you would like to find out more about how Isagenix® can help you to achieve your weight loss and fitness goals when coupled with a strong workout regimen you can contact us through our web-site at, or by calling toll free 1-866-982-DIET (3438).

Validation from Marilyn Vos Savant!

Friday, November 19th, 2010

In my last post I discussed the Kansas State University Professor who decided he was going to eat nothing but junk-food for 10 straight weeks.  The end result of his experiment was that he was able to lose weight by simply counting all the calories in the junk he ate.  You can congratulate him on his success if you wish; however, I still contend that if he continued with that diet his quality of life would rapidly deteriorate.  I believe he would be sick more often and would die earlier than he would if he had taken better care of himself.

In 1984 Jim Fixx the author of The Complete Book of Running, collapsed while jogging at the age of 52 and died.  There were jim fixx Validation from Marilyn Vos Savant!many who found amusement in this irony and claimed that it proved it didn’t matter how you lived, you were still going to die.  The dying part is an inevitability, the “when” is always less clear.  I believe greater clarity in this arena is achieved through better life decisions. You could argue that Mr. Fixx wasted his time by taking good care of himself; but, there are some important factors to consider.  First, Jim started running in the 1960’s when he weighed 220 pounds.  By 1977 he was running an average of 60 miles every week and his weight was down to 159 lbs.  “So what” you may say.  He was in great shape, treated his body well and still died young.  Why should we care?  Jim’s father died of a heart attack at the age of 43.  Jim may have died at an early age, but he suffered from hereditary heart problems.  His coronary arteries had blockages of 99%, 80% and 70% and his cholesterol level was above 250 mg/dl.  I wonder how long Jim Fixx would have lasted if he had remained obese and had never quickened his pace.    Parade Magazine Validation from Marilyn Vos Savant!

Later on the same day that I posted my last blog I was reading the Parade Magazine in my local paper as I am wont to do on a Sunday morning and noticed an article by Marilyn vos Savant.  The topic she addressed was amazingly similar to the one I had written about in my post (

There is a very good reason why there is a syndicated column called Ask Marilyn®.  Marilyn vos Savant is a very smart person who gives intelligent answers to hard questions.  What was the question at hand?  Does weight loss or gain depend solely on the number of calories you consume or is it more dependent upon the type of food you eat?  Her answer, I believe validates many of the ideas I have discussed with this blog.  Essentially, she asserted that “a calorie is a calorie, whether it comes from butter, sugar, or meat.”  In a later article she stated that you cannot gain more than a pound from eating a pound of food, regardless of what the food is (  However, she went on to explain that where the calorie comes from Marilyn Vos Savant Validation from Marilyn Vos Savant!influences the way our bodies function.  Some food takes longer to digest while others produce a faster rise in blood sugar.  If you make the right choices related to your health, nutrition and fitness then your body works the way God intended.

You are What you Eat!!

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

On Monday I read an article about a nutritionist who ate primarily junk-food, i.e. Twinkies®, powdered donuts, Dorito’s®, etc, for 10 weeks…AND LOST 27 POUNDS!!  The article can be found here:

…Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!

Whew, now that I have got that out of my system it is of vital importance that we dissect this little experiment before overweight and obese people start assuming that they actually had it right this whole time.  There are severalKansas State You are What you Eat!! important mitigating factors that need to be identified that I believe will crush the dreams of those that were about to stock up on every sugary, chemically infused snacks at their local grocery store.

First and foremost the Kansas State University nutritionist who conducted this experiment, Professor Mark Haub started with the premise that the only thing that mattered when it came to weight loss was caloric intake.  In other words, regardless of what you eat, the amount of calories in the food you consume and not the source of those calories, will determine your weight.  I have always believed this to be a reasonable theory.

twinkies You are What you Eat!!It is true that the professor dropped 27 pounds, his body fat dropped from 33.4 to 24.9 percent, and his body mass index went from 28.8, considered overweight, to 24.9, which is normal.  However, the professor made an implicit admission that vitamins, minerals, protein etc., are important for basic health as he also took a multivitamin pill and drank a protein shake daily.  In addition, he ate vegetables, typically a can of green beans or three to four celery stalks.  Essentially, the experiment was about weight loss, and most definitely NOT about health.  The professor recognized that losing weight does not equate necessarily to being healthy and that supplements were required to maintain some semblance of health.  This claim is reiterated and supported in a responsive article written by Chuck Norris.  Mr. Norris’ article can be found here:

In a recent post I discussed the revelation that the toxins and impurities we have introduced into our water, food and air may be a primary contributing factor to the cancers that have become so common to the human race (you can read the post here:  If it is assumed that these impurities cause or at least contribute to illness then losing weight by eating junk-food will mean you may become a thin corpse.  With that though it mind, let’s take a look at some of the ingredients in the typical Twinkie® that the professor made a staple in his diet…

  • Sugar
  • Corn syrup
  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Vegetable and/or animal shortening – containing one or more of partially hydrogenated soybean, cottonseed or canola oil, and beef fat.
  • Dextrose
  • Modified corn starch
  • Cellulose gum
  • Leavenings (sodium acid pyrophosphate, baking soda, monocalcium phosphate)
  • Cornstarch
  • Corn syrup solids
  • Mono and diglycerides
  • Soy lecithin
  • Polysorbate 60
  • Dextrin
  • Calcium caseinate
  • Sodium stearol lactylate
  • Wheat gluten
  • Calcium sulphate
  • Natural and artificial flavours
  • Caramel colour
  • Sorbic acid (to retain freshness)
  • Colour added (yellow 5, red 40)

Yikes!!  .  I am assuming everyone knows where I am going here.

Isagenix® systems, paks and products allow you to reduce caloric intake through the use of the Isagenix® IsaLean®buy isagenix products e1i91 You are What you Eat!! meal replacement shakes while offering a cellular cleanse in the form of the Isagenix® Cleanse for Life® Dietary Supplement to cleanse away the impurities we are exposed to.  This is a much healthier alternative to counting the calories in a package of Twinkies®.

The Looming Diabetes Disaster

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Sometimes it takes only a few words to have a major impact on a conversation, e.g. the health of the population of the United States.  I was struck by the brevity of a recent article from Reuters (Diabetes to Double or Triple in U.S. by 2050: Government,, October 22, 2010).  The title leapt off the page and said almost as much as the entire article.  The piece presented grim facts concerning the currentdiabetes type 2 another childhood disease The Looming Diabetes Disaster trends of health and diet in the United States.  If we continue down our current path of inactivity and poor eating habits it is predicted that the occurrence of Diabetes will escalate from its current level of approximately 1 in 10 adults to as high as 1 in 3 by 2050.  Considering the fact that both Tamara and I have a history of Diabetes in our family, this is one of the reasons we have made Isagenix® such a significant part of our lives and the lives of our children.  Diabetes is the gift that keeps on giving.  Once you have it, you have it for life.  In some instances it can be controlled, but it will not go away once you have it.

I have heard it suggested that this is a problem only for those who choose to not take care of themselves.  In reality is a problem that will affect virtually every single American on a multitude of fronts.  First and foremost is the associated cost which was estimated at $174 billion dollars per year in 2007.  The cost in 2050 dollars when we assume the suggested progression of the disease is truly incomprehensible.  The costs will grow exponentially when lost labor, weight related injuries and workers compensation claims are factored in.  This is why Tamara and I speak so passionately about Isagenix® products whenever we are given the opportunity.

dr richard carmona on the obesity epidemic webcastr The Looming Diabetes DisasterDr. Richard Carmona, the former Surgeon General suggested an even more frightening outcome to this growing national problem.  In a speech several years ago he described our poor health as one of the greatest threats to our national security calling it “…the terror within.”  He proposed that in years to come we will find it more and more difficult for us to defend ourselves from internal and external threats (  Essentially, where will we find our soldiers; our firefighters; our law enforcement officers when they can barely get off their couches?  We will be at the mercy of those countries that have seen the importance of good health and fitness.  I have been a law enforcement officer since 1987.  As I progress in age I have discovered the requirement that I maintain my fitness level with the help of Isagenix® for my sake and my families.

Our general lack of effort in this area has prompted many extreme suggestions on how this crisis should be solved.  Most of these suggestions involve the government making the decisions on what is best for the American people.  There are recommendations on local, state and federal levels that government should determine what ingredients and how much of these ingredients should go into our food.  I understand the concern and the sense of urgency.  But I believe that a government making decisions about what is best for me and my family is never a good thing!  To avoid this potential tragedy it falls on all of us to start taking better care of our bodies.  Otherwise, we might find ourselves in a position where entities external to our immediate families are deciding what is “best” for us.   Other than on rare occasion my family does not drink soda.  Yet I do not want someone telling me we can’t.

So what is the solution?  The answers are relatively simple.  Better nutrition, increased physical activity, and greater awareness of what goes into our bodies must become a priority to all of us.  Isagenix® products, paks and systems can play a major role in addressing the factors that can cause diabetes.  The Isagenix® IsaLean® Shake introduces highbuy isagenix products e1i91 The Looming Diabetes Disaster grade nutrition into your diet.  The Isagenix® Cleanse for Life® Nutritional Supplement helps you to cleanse away impurities that can impair body function.  If you cleanse the impurities from your engine, your engine functions the way that God intended.  Subsequently, you are capable of better processing the food you take in and get rid of the impurities you don’t.  There are a multitude of options for you to achieve your health, weight loss, and weight control goals to include the Isagenix® 30-Day Cleansing and Fat Burning System; the Isagenix® 9-Day Cleansing and Fat Burning System; or the Isagenix® Total Health and Wellness System
